A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has hit central Italy, causing extensive damage to a number of towns and killed at least six people.

"The town isn't here anymore," said the mayor of Amatrice in Rieti, believed to be one of the worst-hit areas, and where residents are buried under the debris of collapsed buildings.

The death toll from the quake, which struck near the Umbrian town of Norcia and sent out tremors that could be felt in Rome, is expected to rise.

The worst hit towns were believed to be Accumoli, Amatrice, Posta and Arquata del Tronto, spokesman for the Italian fire department Luca Cari told Reuters. Helicopters would be sent up at first light to assess the damage, he said...

At least 38 people have died and many more are missing after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit a string of hill towns and villages across central Italy. It struck at 3.36am when most people in the hardest-hit towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto were asleep.

Even bigger earthquake caused extensive damage in central Italy on Sunday morning:

Italy earthquake: historic structures levelled in biggest quake since 1980
Sunday 30 October 2016 14.09 GMT

Reports say 6.6-magnitude quake felt over wide area including Rome and Naples and as far as Croatia and Slovenia.
It was the most powerful earthquake to hit Italy since 1980, striking a blow to the regions of Marche and Umbria just days after they were hit by two other earthquakes. It also frightened and displaced thousands of already-jittery residents who have seen the ancient structures and walls in their towns, including the San Benedetto basilica in Norcia, which is considered a sacred site, crumble into heaps on the street.
